Meet our Msite Apprentices

Meet our Msite Apprentices

It’s National Apprenticeships Week, so we thought it would be timely to introduce two of our rising stars here at MSite. We have two apprentices, Joel and Charlotte, both of whom are making a real impact within the business. We caught up with them and their managers to find out more about Apprenticeships with MSite.

Name: Joel Edwards

Role: Desktop Support Technician

Describe your typical day in work: Monitoring Spiceworks (our IT support ticket system), completing coursework and making sure everything is working!

What is your proudest accomplishment at HRS?

Winning Rookie of the year.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

Working in a business that has huge potential and being surrounded with people who are passionate about what they do. It’s a great environment to work in.

Why did you choose to undertake an Apprenticeship?

I felt that university was not for me and I wanted a change, fresh start and to begin a career where I could work and still learn simultaneously.

What are your long-term career aspirations?

To become a professional IT contractor.

What advice would you give to someone who was thinking about starting an Apprenticeship?

Start as soon as you can. It’s a great way to gain qualifications and implement what you learn right into your job role. The real world experience is fantastic!

What would you say to a company that was thinking of taking on an Apprentice of their own?

It is a great way to expose new people to your business and to tap into their potential while helping a young person take their first steps into their career.

Joel’s Manager’s Viewpoint:

“Human Recognition Systems values innovation, so development and learning is important to every member of the team.  When recruiting talent, we always seek out those that are enthusiastic about gaining knowledge, so this means apprenticeships are a natural fit.  We are proud to take that raw talent and witness them develop into employees with not only valuable skills, but also a full understanding of our business and our culture.

“Joel has very rapidly proven himself to play a key role in the Infrastructure Team and an asset to the wider business.  He was awarded “Rookie of the year” for 2019, and we hope he has a long and successful career with HRS.”

(Ian Cooke, Infrastructure Manager at MSite)

Name: Charlotte Smith

Role: Apprentice QA Engineer

Describe your typical day in work: Manually testing software and hardware before changes are deployed to live, writing test scripts, reproducing bugs and completing coursework.

What is your proudest accomplishment at HRS?

Either being the sole tester on the new version of our product MFlow, or winning Team of the Year with the Product Team.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

Being exposed to cool biometric technology!

Why did you choose to undertake an Apprenticeship?

It gave me the opportunity to learn the skills needed for a career I was interested in whilst avoiding university fees.

What are your long-term career aspirations?

I’m not sure yet. Short-term I’d like to gain skills in test automation, and progress into a role focused on writing automated tests.

What advice would you give to someone who was thinking about starting an Apprenticeship?

Do some research on all the different options and make sure it’s right for you. Learning in a real working environment exposes you to opportunities and challenges you wouldn’t face otherwise. Really, the sooner you start the better.

What would you say to a company that was thinking of taking on an Apprentice of their own?

Do it!

Charlotte’s Manager’s Viewpoint:

“A famous quote sums up the value of having an Apprentice “The most dangerous phrase in business is we’ve always done it this way”.

Working with an apprentice can be an eye opener, a breath of fresh air. By nature they will ask questions, challenge processes and try to impress. They will come up with new ideas, suggestions and always bring great excitement.

I have worked with two apprentices in my six years here at HRS and both times have been very positive experiences. It’s also pretty rewarding to be responsible for helping to shape someone’s career and progression, mentoring them to help them to find their path.”

(Paolo Addeo, Senior QA at MSite)
